“Julius & Roméa” est le 12ème tome de la série Jeremiah.

The story takes place in the United States in an unspecified future, about 20 years after a widespread war between whites and blacks that destroyed much of civilization. The hero, Jeremiah, is a farmer’s son; initially naive and inexperienced, he matures and hardens over the course of the series as he navigates a highly chaotic post-apocalyptic world (often reminiscent of the movie *Mad Max*), while holding onto certain moral values. He is accompanied by Kurdy Malloy, a lawless and unscrupulous mercenary who is unreliable and of questionable morality but who shares Jeremiah’s visceral rejection of injustice. The pair is bound by a deeply unsettling love-hate relationship.

Each album a standalone story, but—in addition to the reappearance of certain characters throughout the series—some volumes are interconnected. The series’ originality lies in the fact that the author very often weaves each volume around an anecdotal story that is independent of the main characters, using it as a backdrop to explore an important social issue and recount an episode in the lives of Jeremiah and Kurdy.

Several recurring and contemporary themes of the 21st century can be found throughout the series: the corruption of power or the justice system, enlightened despotism and dictatorship, slavery and cults, drugs, individualism, pedophilia, racism, and the mafia world. These themes are often addressed in a violent, highly cynical, and nuanced manner, moving away from the trend toward Manichean storytelling often favored in comic books: injustice persists, corrupt power is replaced by an even more perverted counter-power, and the “good guys” don’t often win. Kurdy’s brutal cynicism and Jeremiah’s bleak realism are used to underscore the author’s apparent lack of faith in the human race.
