FOR NARRATIVE PRINTED IMAGES

"The narrative images I draw only exist at the moment of printing. Everything that precedes is there only to delay the moment when the image arrives. This was already true with silkscreen, but it's even truer with pigment printing. Constructing the elements that will compose it, assembling them in a file designed for the printing format, knowing that each file can be modified to give rise to variants, understanding that preparatory drawings only serve to prolong the pleasure of waiting, imposes an obvious fact: the printed image is not the reproduction of a pre-existing work, but the true original. Behind this lies another pleasure: the realization that all this time spent in the machine gives the image a narrative power that it could only find there, in the machine. The story comes with the image. The verb was not at the beginning, but comes last to write the story dictated by the drawing. Fortunately, none of this makes any sense, other than to make an image that stands up and lasts.

My first image published by Galerie Collin is a continuation of the offprint designed forAlain Lachartre's book OBJECTIF PUB. As we move from small to large format, things change and the story becomes clearer - all that's left is to write it.
As in the ARRÊT SUR HISTOIRE series that I draw and write every quarter for LES ARTS DESSINÉS magazine, I find the story in the drawing. While in the magazine, the image is on the right-hand page and the text on the left, here, on the wall, it could only be outside the image.

« J’ai écrit l’histoire qui va avec le 60×80 et imaginé une série de 8 cartons montrant chacun un détail différent de l’image entière à l’échelle 1. J’ai ensuite imprimé chaque détail avec au dos le même texte au format 24×16 cm, chacun des 8 cartons faisant office de certificat signé. Soit, 8 certificats différents 24×16 = 8 estampes pigmentaires différentes sur papier aquarelle 400 gr. associées aux 8 exemplaires de la grande estampe pigmentaire »
